In this iteration of a collaborative piece with Nate Lareau, the hypnotic sound of bouncing ping pong balls is wedded to the tumbling dryers at Athens, Ohio’s Speed Queen Laundromat. Many spaces that are perceived as neutral, such as a park, sidewalk, or shopping mall, are actually highly codified by public and private regulations. Lareau and I approach these areas as fields of experimentation that are fluid, multiple, and open. We focus on playfully subversive activities, not out of disrespect, but to interrupt habituated routines such as, in this case, doing the laundry.
